Location
Liverpool is a city in Merseyside, England, on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. It is about 350 km north-west of London and just over 50 km west of Manchester.
Liverpool can trace its history back to 1207, and it was granted city status in 1880. By this time it had already established itself as Britain's second city and one of the world's greatest ports, the location of the first managed wet dock in the world in 1715 and the first inter-city railway in the world, the Liverpool-Manchester railway, which opened in 1830.
Today, Liverpool is not only one of the most exciting cities in the country, but boasts one of the fastest-growing regional economies in the UK, as well as being named the second-safest UK city to live in by the UK Statistics Authority. The city was named as no.3 in the Rough Guide's Top Ten Cities to Visit 2014.
The city celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007, and it held the European Capital of Culture title together with Stavanger, Norway, in 2008. Labelled the "World Capital City of Pop" by Guinness World Records, the popularity of The Beatles, and other groups from the Merseybeat era and later, contributes to Liverpool's status as a tourist destination.
Several areas of Liverpool city centre were granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2004. The Liverpool Maritime Mercantile Cityincludes the Pier Head, Albert Dock and William Brown Street. Liverpool is also the home of two Premier League football clubs, Liverpool and Everton. The world-famous Grand National also takes places annually at Aintree Racecourse on the outskirts of the city.
