Overview
The University of Sheffield is a world famous university, located in Sheffield in South Yorkshire. Ranked within the world's top 100 universities, the University of Sheffield is one of the original 'red brick' universities and a member of the elite Russell Group. It was founded by the merger of three colleges in 1905 and currently has a population of almost 27,000 students, including more than 3,700 international students from 120 countries.
The University of Sheffield boasts five Nobel Prize winners in its departments, as well as four Queen's Anniversary Prizes. It is currently the lead institution for systems engineering, smart materials and stem cell technology in a network of research universities around the world. Several firms such as Boeing, Rolls-Royce and The Welcome Trust are big investors in the university because of its engineering strength, providing strong links with industry in many courses and departments.

The centre of the University of Sheffield's campus lies one mile to the west of Sheffield city centre. Sheffield is a vibrant city in the north of England and a very popular choice for student life. It is the fifth largest city in England located about 2 and a half hours north of London, , as well as the greenest city in England with 150 woodlands and 50 public parks within the city. The greenery is throughout the city from the centre, where the Winter Gardens is Europe's largest city centre temperate glasshouse, to the countryside, where the Peak District national park is only 10 minutes away from the University.

Accommodation
First year students are guaranteed university accommodation. There are currently 5,879 places available in university accommodation spread across three sites, most in the west of the city or on campus. The majority of accommodation is in en-suite with a shared kitchen, but shared bathrooms, larger deluxe rooms and studio apartments are also available.Sheffield has the lowest student living costs in the UK according to the Royal Bank of Scotland's Student Living Index, published August 2005. This means that private accommodation near the campus is cheap and easy to find through the university.
